Welcome back, I can’t believe it’s already week 5 of the Spring One Room Challenge!
This week was a busy week with a big project to update this space that I hadn’t planned originally planned on doing as part of the challenge. If you’ve been following along with EverydayMrs’s One Room Challenge then you will remember I left off here last week with the wallpaper and painted walls complete. After that was all finished I was unhappy with how the laminate countertop looked, let’s be real I was unhappy with them before but thought they looked even worse once the bathroom was started to have a more “glam” look.
I had seen DIY concrete countertops all over Pinterest and the web so I decided I would give it a whirl as I didn’t have any other options in my budget. The tutorial I followed was from the blog Design, Dining, & Diapers (thanks Taryn!).
Once I applied the concrete, (Henry’s Feather Finish) there was a lot of sanding involved…
And by a lot I mean seriously, a lot. After the first night of sanding gave me a migraine masks were necessary the next (included goggles as well but I saved you from that pic) this little electric sander and I formed a love hate, mostly hate relationship over the past week.
This being my first try at DIY concrete countertops I’m pretty proud of myself though if I were to try my hand at it again there are definitely several things I learned that I would do different. The countertops have a “rougher” look than I was planning on but I think it adds some great texture to the space. Would I have loved to just be able to go and buy a new countertop and not make my entire house dust and sand covered? Of course but then I wouldn’t have the gratification of trying something new and doing it myself, it’s called a challenge for a reason! Once I add all my decorative details I think I will be so so happy with the finished product.
Also updated this week was the light fixture which is now painted gold! The gold is so so much better and just like I love to mix silver and gold jewelry it works just as well mixing your metals/metallics in home design as well.
I’m loving how it’s all coming together and I’m beyond excited to share the finished space! Stay tuned next week to see all the details.
